The Eco-Squad and Environment Club collaborate to work on the new ‘Eco-Schools’ initiative which was introduced at Emerson Valley last year. The government are encouraging all schools to become more sustainable and their progress is tracked through the Sustainable Schools Strategy. We were delighted to receive our bronze award last year and are currently working towards our silver award. One of our main foci this year, as well as maintaining and improving the school grounds, is the conservation of water. We are excited that work on the school garden should begin this year.
Children who are involved in ‘eco-issues’ gain a wealth of knowledge and understanding in areas such as conservation, renewable resources, community cohesion and global awareness as well having the chance to ‘get their hands dirty’ by pond dipping, gardening and planting new trees. We also plan and run fund-raising initiatives, which enable children to develop organisational and management skills.
