A good command of English is essential to the whole process of education, communication and life itself. Therefore our overarching commitment is to enable every child to develop their command of English to the best of their ability.
Our curriculum provides purposeful opportunities for the development of children’s language through reading, writing and speaking and listening. These three strands have equal priority and are interwoven into carefully planned units of study covering a range of fiction, non fiction and poetry.
Wherever appropriate, we teach English skills through the curriculum and to apply skills learned in other subjects too.
We aim to:
- Encourage children to enjoy language and become confident and independent communicators, both orally and in written form.
- Give opportunities to explore language through a variety of texts.
- Enable children to read fluently and with understanding across a broad range of texts.
- Teach children to read for different purposes, including enjoyment.
- Encourage pupils to question, challenge and to develop a critical response to a range of texts.
- Develop in children the ability to write in recognisable genre/text types.
- Enable children to write in well formed, fluent style showing a good knowledge of English grammar and punctuation.
- Enable children to access a variety of strategies to develop a wide spelling vocabulary.
