The school is a learning community and we recognise that each individual is important and has a valuable contribution to make towards the quality of life enjoyed by the people within it. We continually stress the importance of honesty, trust, fairness, self-discipline, mutual respect and self esteem.
We have developed a Code of Conduct which applies to all members of Emerson Valley School community and reflects our view that each individual is of value and has a right to be treated with respect and equality.
- Take pride in our school.
- Remember to care for everyones feelings.
- Speak and listen respectfully to everyone.
- Be honest with yourself and others.
- Respect the rules of our community.
- Be positive.
The school rules give clear guidance as to the expected standard of behaviour for our children in the school.
- Walk quietly.
- Always make sure your teacher knows where you are.
- Always try to speak quietly.
- Wear school uniform.
Rewards and responsibility are powerful tools when managing behaviour. We have weekly class awards which are recorded in a gold book and presented in a weekly assembly. Merit points are awarded for good work and contribute to individual bronze, silver and gold awards. Class hundred squares reward class behaviour. Names are entered in the smiley book for good attitudes and behaviour, and praise postcards are given.
There are clear sanctions for poor behaviour through the use of the class behaviour book. Parents will be kept informed of concerns about the behaviour of their child, including persistently disrupting the learning of others. A child may be excluded if their behaviour is extreme or is accumulatively poor. This may be an in-house or a full exclusion. This may take place either at lunchtime or for the full day.
All children are expected to complete homework on time. Children who take responsibility in these ways are rewarded in class.
As part of our commitment to promoting good behaviour, self esteem and personal safety, we use the 'SEAL' programme across the school. In addition our Learning Mentor is available to work with children and families.
